Plano is a city in the state of Texas, USA. There are numerous businesses in the city, including the Dr. Pepper soda factory. The city’s population is about 250,000 people. Plano is a city in central Texas, part of Collin County. It is one of the major suburbs of Dallas, a few tens of kilometers from the center of the metropolis. Plano’s borders with neighboring cities in the metropolitan area are very relative. Plano lies in the steppe zone, on the so-called Great Plains. Hence the name – “plano” in Spanish means “flat”. Settlers began developing the area in the 1840s.

Initially there was a ranch, a sawmill, a mill, later a postal service, and in 1872 a railroad. Nevertheless, until the late 1960s, Plano was a tiny town. When the construction boom started around Dallas, however, the town grew significantly due to the influx of workers.

Plano Highlights

Plano is a green city. There are many shady parks, among which stand out “Bob Woodruff Park” (120 hectares) and Oak Point Park, which is the size of a huge Central Park in New York. National Heritage Sites in Plano include the former train station, now a museum, and the Emmy Wilson Mansion, which also houses the local museum.

The city is a suburb of Dallas. On the Trinity River in northeast Texas is the city of Dallas. Dallas combined with Fort Worth make up what is known as the Texas Silicon Valley, where many telecommunications giants are based.

Today, Dallas is famous for its theater tradition, music stages, and numerous concerts taking place in every corner of the city.

There are many rivers in Texas. They all belong to the Gulf of Mexico basin. The Rio Grande and its tributary the Pecos, the Brazos, and a tributary of the Mississippi Red River are the most full-flowing rivers in Texas. On the Louisiana border the terrain is swampy, the eastern counties are still forested, and the western counties lie in a semi-desert area. The remainder of the country was made up of steppes.

Texas was inhabited by the Comanche, Cherokee, Apache, Caddo, and Cayowa tribes. Europeans arrived here in 1519, when the coastline was mapped, and in 1528 Nunez de Vaca, a Spanish conquistador, landed in Texas, where he lived for six years. It was not until 1682 that the first settlement appeared. By the end of the 18th century much of the territory was part of New Spain, which achieved independence in 1821 under the name of the Mexican Empire. In 1836-46 part of the state belonged to the independent republic of Texas. After the Mexican-American War, Texas became a state of the United States.
